We are pleased to announce that Tokyo Kintsugi Workshop TSUGU TSUGU, which pre-opened on May 15, 2022, will fully open on June 25, 2022.
June 25, 2022: Installation of jumbo urushi drying chamber for grand opening
Completely handmade urushi drying chamber (called “urushi buro” in Japanese) was completed after more than a month of applying lacquer to domestic hiba (Japanese cypress) wood, under the supervision and production of Mr. Shibata, the master of Yuki Matano, the kintsugi artist and representative of Tokyo Kintsugi Workshop TSUGUTSUGU. Creating a warm and humid environment ideal for “drying” the lacquer, the chamber is filled with vessels that are being repaired with kintsugi method by students in the classes and by professional repairers who receive requests for kintsugi repair, further enhancing the quality of the kintsugi process.
Since the pre-opening, we have already received nearly 20 applications for new members, and we have also received positive feedback from locals passing by on Asakusa Street and people heading to Senso-ji Temple.
In a spacious room 1.5 times larger than the Ebisu studio, we continue to provide personalized instruction in kintsugi for each of our students.
We will continue to offer kintsugi courses by a former professional maki-e lacquerware artist, and English lessons will be offered to non-Japanese students by an English-speaking teacher. Eventually, we would like to make it a place to spread the appeal of lacquerware in a wide range of genres beyond kintsugi, such as maki-e and urushi lacquerware.
For those of you who think kintsugi is too difficult to learn, we offer a one-day kintsugi experience. Please contact us in advance by e-mail.
